Dowry season

The period after Eid is often a popular time for weddings. While this brings happiness and celebration, it also reminds us of the painful tradition of dowry. Even today, despite clear religious and legal opposition, many families expect dowry from the bride’s side. This causes serious financial stress for many families and often becomes the main reason for choosing or rejecting marriage proposals. Sadly, many girls are seen as a burden if their families cannot afford to give large dowries. Some weddings are delayed or called off due to these unfair demands.

Even worse, many women face pressure or abuse after marriage if the dowry does not meet expectations. It is time we come together as a society to end this harmful practice. Marriage should be a bond of respect and love not a deal based on money and gifts. Religious leaders, media and educational institutions should speak up against dowry, especially during this busy wedding season.
