Prince Andrew appears to be springing back into action, albeit cautiously, as talks begin about a major promotion for his two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
The Duke of York, who has been in an ongoing row with his brother King Charles over Royal Lodge, has been quietly making some changes in order to continue living in the 30-room mansion despite the financial crunch.
It was previously reported that the monarch has been making efforts to for his disgraced brother to move into Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s former home, Frogmore Cottage, to cut down on the burden on the Crown. However, the contentious royal has remained stubborn to defy the King’s orders on the matter.
A property expert Robin Edwards revealed that rather than agreeing to move into a low-maintenance, especially after Andrew was financially cut off from the royal funds and security, the 65-year-old royal has hired a budget security company.
The expert claimed that Andrew has “apparently been forced to economise and hire a cut-price security firm to guard him and Royal Lodge”.
He added, “However, he has refused to leave his lavish mansion and move to the significantly smaller Frogmore Cottage, believing it to be not grand enough for him.”
Andrew – who secured the 75-year lease from the Crown Estate in August 2003 – is currently personally funding the property upkeep and the security arrangements and the price tag is “considerable”.
“Even back in September 2002 that was very conservatively estimated at least £7.5 million excluding tax,” Edwards explained. “The costs are likely to have grown significantly since then with time and inflation.”
Moreover, since the property sits outside Windsor Castle’s security perimeter, the security costs are “substantially higher”.
The update on Andrew’s Royal Lodge comes as royal author Ingrid Seward suggested that there is promotion waiting for Beatrice and Eugenie, especially when Prince William ascends to the throne.
“When William ascends the throne, Beatrice and Eugenie will be valuable assets, and I’m certain they will get involved with royal duties,” she told Hello! magazine. “It makes perfect sense, because he will need them.”
She also noted that the King is fond of his nieces which is why they often get asked to perform special tasks to support to monarchy by the monarch. As for his uncle, William has plans to “completely exclude” him.
It may appear that Andrew is holding out hope that his daughters would be able to protect him for any repercussions. However, it remains to be seen how that pans out.
